Washington, D.C. – The same week Donald Trump is tanking the US economy and causing costs to skyrocket for all Americans, House and Senate Republicans are advancing their billionaire-first tax plans, which make the rich even richer at the expense of everyone else.
This week is quite a split screen:
- Trump is causing economic upheaval that increases costs for working families, kills good-paying jobs, and destroys retirement savings for millions of Americans.
- Republicans in Congress are taking steps to further enrich billionaires and big corporations by slashing health care and other essential services that everyday Americans rely on.
Congressional Republicans prioritizing billionaire tax breaks as the economy is in free fall is toxic on every imaginable level. Poll after poll has shown us that Americans from across the political spectrum, including Trump supporters, oppose both cutting Medicaid and giving tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy.
- Voters overwhelmingly disapprove of Congress giving more tax cuts to wealthy individuals (76%) and large corporations (70%).
- Trump’s own pollster found that a majority of people who voted for Donald Trump oppose cutting Medicaid funding – matching many other polls with the same findings.
- More than 75% of Americans support raising taxes on the ultra-wealthy and big corporations, including more than 60% of Republicans.
The data is clear: no one wants the Billionaire Tax Scam Republicans are advancing through Congress. Why are they doing it anyway, especially amid an economic crisis that’s hurting everyday Americans? Because their billionaire donors demanded it, and Trump and Congressional Republicans are fine throwing working families under the bus to deliver for the rich and giant corporations.
